Reeling: The Chambermaid

A compelling tale of forbidden love set in Prague against the backdrop of war-torn Europe, THE CHAMBERMAID emerges as the gripping dramatic offspring of PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE and DOWNTON ABBEY. Amid societal upheaval during the First World War, maid Anka and noblewoman Resi, from polar opposite ends of the social class spectrum, forge an unlikely and complex bond. The evolution of their fiery relationship, reminiscent of the power dynamics in THE FAVOURITE, unveils a deeply human story of love and survival. Set in a sprawling yet claustrophobic house alive with gossiping maids and opulent lifestyles, their shared quest for agency butts up against the patriarchy that controls their lives. Showcased through stunning cinematography and commanding lead performances, the film captures the pain, heartache, and resilience of these women who find in each other their only respite from a male-dominated world. With its candid portrayal of love, war, and class, THE CHAMBERMAID resonates with hauntingly beautiful yet universally familiar themes of the human experience.
